Thirlwall Inquiry

The Thirlwall Inquiry will begin its substantive hearings on 10 September, with opening statements from Counsel to the Inquiry and from legal representatives of Core Participants. The hearing will then move on to hearing evidence from key staff and the executive board at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

It is a critical investigation to examine the events at the Countess of Chester Hospital and their implications following the conviction of former nurse, Lucy Letby, for the murder of  seven babies and the attempted murder of seven others.

Switalskis represent many of the families named in the criminal indictment. We are proud to assist Lady Justice Thirlwall with her Inquiry into the events at the Countess of Chester Hospital and the resulting conviction of former nurse Lucy Letby.

This Inquiry will explore the circumstances surrounding the tragic events leading to the deaths of and harm to innocent babies within the healthcare system. The Inquiry will seek to provide answers for the victims’ families in an effort to determine accountability and what must be done to prevent such incidents from ever happening again.

At Switalskis, we are committed to providing expert legal support to those affected by these events. Our team of experienced solicitors will represent several families at the Thirlwall Inquiry.

What should I expect from a public inquiry?

We understand that being part of a public inquiry, especially one of this scale and sensitivity, can be an overwhelming and emotional experience. At Switalskis, our approach is centred on empathy, clarity, and unwavering support. Here’s how we can help:

  • Guiding you through the process: From the moment you become involved in an inquiry, we will guide you through every stage. We’ll start with a thorough consultation to understand your experiences and how they relate to the inquiry. Our team will explain the process in clear, accessible language, ensuring you know what to expect and how we can achieve the best possible outcome for you.
  • Emotional and legal support: Giving evidence about traumatic events can be incredibly difficult. Our team is trained to provide both legal expertise and the emotional support individuals and families need. We will prepare those who are asked to give evidence at the inquiry, always prioritising each individual’s well-being. Should media attention become overwhelming, we can help with managing the press interest and handling any requests on behalf of those we represent. Court Orders made in the criminal proceedings relating to the crimes of Lucy Letby remain in place which prevent the reporting of certain indent details – including the names of babies and their families, as well as certain witnesses.
  • Advocating for rights: As legal representatives, we will advocate for the rights of the individuals and families we are supporting and representing throughout the inquiry. We aim to ensure that each person we support is treated fairly within the Inquiry process.
