Birth Trauma Awareness Week 2018

By Suzanne Munroe

It is estimated that in the UK as many as 20,000 women per year have a traumatic birth experience leading to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Of course, the negative effects are not exclusive to women who have given birth, and many partners experience psychological distress after witnessing the mother give birth under upsetting or stressful circumstances.

A difficult birth can have a devastating effect on a parent’s mental and physical health. Their day-to-day life can be completely altered due to the impact it has on their ability to bond with their baby, and they may struggle to deal with the traumatic events and move on from their experience.

Parents often suffer in silence as they fear that they may lose their baby or that they have no right to feel traumatised as they have a healthy child. As a result, people do not reach out to receive the treatment that they need and deserve.

Birth Trauma Awareness week  hopes to highlight the message that people suffering from a birth trauma are not alone. There are many organisations offering emotional and practical support to families in this situation.

Suzanne Munroe , Head of Clinical Negligence  at Switalskis Solicitors, will be speaking at Standing Together to Cope with Birth Trauma  about how many of our clients have to cope with a traumatic birth, and the help we can give them to start to deal with the event and rebuild their lives.

Standing Together to Cope with Birth Trauma  is taking place on 28th September 2018 at Barnsley Town Hall. The conference is being held to “raise awareness of the impact of birth trauma with a focus on detection, prevention, support and treatment”.

All proceeds will be donated to birth trauma charities.
