Stamford House

Our Abuse Claims team is currently investigating reports of physical, sexual, and racial abuse suffered by children and young people at Stamford House Remand Centre, located on Goldhawk Road, Shepherd’s Bush, during the 1970s and 1980s.

Stamford House, which first opened in 1933, initially housed both boys and girls, though from 1950, it exclusively accommodated boys. The centre was originally designed to provide temporary care and assessment for young people who had appeared before the Juvenile Court. Local councils were required, under the 1948 Children Act, to promote the well-being and development of children in their care. In many cases, this included psychiatric assessments and recommendations for long-term care or schooling.

Responsibility for Stamford House transferred to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in 1965 following the Local Government Act of 1963. The centre continued to operate as a remand home until its closure in the 1990s.

Unfortunately, many of the accounts from former residents reveal an environment where abuse was rife, and the care promised under the Children Act was far from realised. Boys frequently attempted to escape the abusive conditions, only to be returned by authorities, perpetuating the cycle of mistreatment. These accounts highlight a stark contrast between the intended purpose of Stamford House and the lived experiences of those placed there.

Our team has been working closely with survivors of abuse at Stamford House, helping them explore their legal options and pursue claims for compensation. If you, or someone you know, experienced abuse—whether physical, sexual, or racial—while at Stamford House, we encourage you to come forward. Legal guidance is available to help you understand your rights and to ensure that your experiences are acknowledged.
