The Eastwood Park Detention Centre Compensation Scheme is a government initiative set to provide compensation to former detainees who were physically abused or assaulted while serving their sentence at HMP Eastwood Park.
The scheme is expected to commence shortly following a meeting with the Ministry of Justice on 11 July 2024.
Anyone who was physically assaulted while detained at Eastwood Park Detention Centre is eligible for compensation. Additionally, there are provisions for individuals who sustained lasting physical or injuries as a direct result of their treatment.
Compensation is categorised as follows:
Compensation awards range between £3,250.00 and £9,500.00.
Eastwood Park Detention Centre in South Gloucestershire operated from 1964 until 1995 and accommodated boys aged 14-17.

Former detention centre officer Patrick Devaney was convicted of offences against detainees. Other officers involved in the abuse could not be prosecuted due to their passing or being unfit to stand trial.
Devaney was convicted of abusing boys aged 14 to 17 using both emotional and physical mistreatment. His methods included punching the boys, and forcing them into strenuous exercise routines, which often led to physical over-exhaustion.
Complaints of sexual abuse will be addressed through civil litigation, with the Ministry of Justice having set up a dedicated team to ensure these cases are dealt with swiftly.
