World Suicide Prevention Day 2020
By Amy Clowrey
The 10th of September marks World Suicide Prevention Day which is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). The purpose of World Suicide Prevention Day is to raise awareness of ways to prevent suicide.
Many survivors of childhood abuse suffer with significant mental health issues which can cause suicidal ideation with some survivors ultimately taking their own lives.
Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic support services available in the community has become more restricted which, in turn, has had a huge impact upon those who suffer from mental ill-health. At the start of the pandemic Bev Mercer, a solicitor in the child abuse department, wrote a helpful article outlining the support services available for survivors of abuse which can be found here .
Due to the lack of support services available in the community at this time many will be relying on the support of their family and friends. This can be difficult for both the survivor and their confidant who may not have the training to understand how best to help. For this reason I thought it would be helpful to provide a link The Survivors Network who have prepared some useful guidance on supporting survivors of abuse. You can read the article here .
