Protecting vulnerable cyclists: simple safety measures

By Rosie Dodds

Published In: Personal Injury

Some road users are more vulnerable than others. For this reason, the Highway Code affords extra protection to categories of road users felt to be vulnerable. These are people who have less crash protection than occupants of motor vehicles and who are therefore more likely to be injured or killed in a road traffic accident.

Cyclists are specifically categorised as a ‘vulnerable road user’ and according to Department of Transport statistics, 94 cyclists were killed on UK roads in 2022 and 84 according to the provisional figures for 2023.

Rosie Dodds , associate solicitor, specialising in fatal and complex injuries claims, has dealt with a number of cases involving cyclists.

Rosie comments: “Unfortunately, cyclists are vulnerable when using the road and I have dealt with devastating consequences caused by the failure of vehicle drivers to be sufficiently aware of the presence of cyclists.

“Some of my recent cases where I have been able to obtain compensation for accidents involving cyclists sadly includes fatal accidents and injuries causing permanent disability.

“It is right that under the Highway Code , cyclists are given extra protection and drivers should always be vigilant and take extra time to look out for cyclists, particularly when pulling out of or into junctions.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents , RoSPA, have created a useful factsheet of advice for drivers on how to avoid collisions with vulnerable road users , and specifically cyclists. They provide the following advice:

  • Always be aware and expect to see cyclists
  • Always check your mirrors for cyclists, particularly when turning left and at roundabouts
  • Give cyclists plenty of room when overtaking
  • Respect cycle lanes
  • Slow your speed if you are aware of the presence of cyclist
  • Do not overtake a cyclist of you plan to turn left shortly afterwards

Rosie adds: “It is reassuring to see there has been a possible decrease in fatal accidents involving cyclists from 2022 to 2023, but there are still too many of these tragic accidents occurring. We all have to be respectful of each other when using the road and take extra care to look out for vulnerable road users.”
