By Rob Casey, Caroline Chandler

Published In: Child Abuse

Switalskis is now assisting survivors of physical abuse at Eastwood Park Detention Centre to claim compensation under the Ministry of Justice Compensation Scheme, which officially opened in January 2025. This scheme provides financial redress to individuals who were physically assaulted while serving a Detention Centre Order at Eastwood Park.

Who Can Claim Compensation?

The compensation scheme is open to anyone who:

  • Was detained at Eastwood Park Detention Centre at any time between 1964 and 1995.
  • Suffered physical abuse or assault while serving their sentence.

Compensation awards range between £3,000 and £9,500 , depending on the severity and circumstances of the abuse.

Background: Abuse at Eastwood Park Detention Centre

Eastwood Park, located in South Gloucestershire, operated between 1964 and 1995 , accommodating boys aged 14 to 17 . A long-running police investigation into institutional abuse at the centre led to the conviction of former detention centre officer Patrick Devaney for offences against detainees. However, he was not the only perpetrator—other officers either passed away or were deemed unfit to stand trial.

How to Apply for Compensation

The claims process is straightforward , and Switalskis will guide applicants every step of the way. Importantly:

  • Applicants receive 100% of their compensation—there are no legal fees.
  • The Ministry of Justice is handling these claims efficiently to ensure survivors receive justice without unnecessary delays.

If you are unsure about your eligibility, our team can assess your claim confidentially and advise on your next steps.

What About Sexual Abuse Claims?

Switalskis is also aware of reports of sexual abuse at Eastwood Park. These cases fall outside the compensation scheme and will be pursued through civil litigation . The Ministry of Justice has assured us that a dedicated team will handle these claims swiftly and fairly.
