Brothers convicted of child sex offences in Barrow and Leeds
By Sally Smith
Three brothers have been found guilty of non-recent child sex offences in Barrow and Leeds following a lengthy trial at Preston Crown Court.
The Brothers, Shaha Amran Miah, 48, Shaha Alman Miah, 47, and Shaha Joman Miah, 38, were convicted of child sex offences that occurred between 1996 and 2010.
Some of the convictions concerned children as young as six or seven who were subjected to abuse which continued for several years. Other victims were teenagers when the abuse took place and believed that they were in relationships with the men. The children were groomed and given gifts, alcohol and cigarettes and were threatened with physical violence if they told anyone what was happening to them. The modus operandi of the men and the way young people were drawn in, and then prevented from reporting or escaping the abuse is similar to that we have seen in cases across the north of England and elsewhere in the UK.
It can often take many years for survivors of this sort of frightening abuse to come forward, or even recognise their experiences as abuse. This and other successful prosecutions do show however that even decades later convictions can be secured, and dangerous abusers put behind bars.
The men who pleaded guilty were convicted of the offences below and were remanded into custody pending sentencing which is due to take place on 21 February 2025.
Shaha Amran Miah: Indecent Assault x7; Indecency with a Child x7; Rape of child x1; Kidnapping x1; Intimidation x2; and Sexual Assault x1
Shaha Alman Miah, of Leeds, was found guilty of Sexual Activity with a Child x3
Shaha Joman Miah, of Doncaster, was found guilty of Indecent Assault x8; Indecency with Child x4; Sexual Activity with a Child x3; Causing a Child to Engage in Sexual Activity x5; Rape of child x9; Sexual Assault of a Child x6; and Sexual Activity with Child x5
